Lorraine Daston is Director emerita of the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin, and Visiting Professor and member of the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago. She has published broadly on topics in the history of science, including probability and statistics, wonders and the order of nature, objectivity, and the moral authority of nature. Her most recent publications include Against Nature (MIT Press, 2019) and Rules: A Short History of What We Live By (Princeton University Press, 2022). She is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a member of the Berlin- Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and the American Philosophical Society, and a corresponding member of the British Academy. For her scholarly work, she has been awarded the Sarton Medal of the History of Science Society, the Lichtenberg Medal of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences, the Dan David Prize, and the Heineken Prize for History of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences.

Daston will give three Lectures:

13/11- The Republic of Letters, 18th Century: Pen-Pal Science.

15/11- Internationalism, 19th Century: Science as a World Project.

17/11- The Scientific Community, 20th Century: Governance Without Governments.
