History and Sports – A Workshop for the General Public

Monday, November 24 at 5:00 PM, on Zoom

Sport is one of the central cultural phenomena of the 20th and 21st centuries. Despite its cultural significance, academic research on the subject- particularly that published in Hebrew- remains relatively limited. This is especially evident in studies that do not focus directly on aspects of Israeli or Jewish culture. As a result, a significant methodological and cultural gap has emerged in the field, which also affects the quality of existing research. Studies on sport in Israel often suffer from provincial perspectives and are disconnected from the broader discourse in global sports research.

In 2023, a special issue of the journal History was published with the aim of beginning to bridge this gap. The issue generated interest, and in its wake, we- the editors and contributors to the issue- seek, at the request of the Israeli Historical Society, to continue developing the field within the academic community in Israel, particularly among history students.

The workshop included three short lectures followed by an open discussion with the audience.
